*520  $aWith the creation of the Baroque style, European architecture reached what many people would consider to be its zenith. The aspirations and ideas of kings and cardinals, of politicians and philosophers, were expressed in monumental buildings whose spacial context was often all-important. The closed and static universe of the Renaissance was replaced by a new vision of the world as open-ended and in flux: Baroque architecture helped to convey the position of the individual in a system where church or state wielded absolute power. It is no coincidence that some of the most elaborate and sumptuous groupings of Baroque buildings were erected in Rome, Paris and Versailles in the 17th century. The three main chapters of the book on the Baroque city, the Baroque church and the Baroque palace survey the architecture of these cities and of other cities throughout Europe including Turin, Florence, Prague, London, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Copenhagen, the church architecture of Della Porta, Mansart, Borromini, Bernini and Guarini and the development of the hôtel in France being given particular attention
